Overview A+ Paradox delay is the result of our experiments with the DSP chip and sample rate. We took our Astronaut reverb, replaced the internal fixed-frequency clock generator with an external adjustable LFO and pushed the chip’s boundaries, going all the way from pristine Hi-Fi sounds to true Lo-Fi grit. The resulting A+ Paradox delay is an experimental device with three work modes, all of which can be used with either forward or reverse delay. TIME and REGEN control knobs are two-way, meaning their initial position is at 12 o’clock instead of 7 o’clock: With the TIME knob, go clockwise from 12 o’clock to get classic delay with up to 1 second delay time (or even longer, depending on the WARP knob position), or go counterclockwise for reverse delay (up to 0.5 seconds). With the REGEN knob, go clockwise from 12 o’clock to increase the amount of repeats, which will be pretty much unfiltered. Go counterclockwise, and the increasing repeats will go through a resonant low-pass filter, which provides an “analog” character and easy self-oscillation. The pedal has switchable tails. This way, when you hit the bypass switch, you can either let the tails play out or cut them off instantly. Controls The WARP knob is a multifunctional control that sets the sample rate depending on the mode; The MIX knob controls the delayed signal’s output volume; The REGEN knob controls feedback and filtering; The TIME knob controls delay time and selects between forward and reverse delay; The MODE switch selects one of the three available modes. Modes Select one of the three available modes with the MODE switch: Manual frequency setup (MODE switch down). In this mode, the WARP knob controls sample rate, delay time and overall sound quality. Sample rate can be reduced all the way to 3kHz (with delay time increasing proportionally) to achieve some really lo-fi sounds. If you don’t go to the extremes with the WARP knob, you can add a touch of the 80’s sound to your music. Alternatively, you can set the TIME knob to 12 o’clock and turn the Paradox into a bit crusher. Anything further than 12 o’clock on the WARP knob goes way into experimental territory. Manual frequency setup + modulation (MODE switch in the middle). This time, the WARP knob controls sample rate along with modulation speed and depth. Sample rate in this mode is 1.5 times higher than in the first mode. Vinyl-like scratches also appear in the sound, as the chip is doing some really heavy lifting. If you want to get chorused or flanged delays, this mode is your choice. Random frequency mode (MODE switch up). The WARP knob controls the period between sample rate fluctuations. Each change in sample rate affects delay time and pitch. Features The Paradox delay offers a broad sound palette: 12 main modes (2 delay types x 2 filter types x 3 modes) along with a bit crusher and a flanger. There’s a whole depth of tones to explore! The pedal allows for experiments with ultra-short delay times. Slapback, Robo-Voice, odd reflections – you name it, the Paradox can do it; The repeats’ filtering is affected by sample rate, which is controlled by the WARP knob; Basic maximum delay times (with the WARP knob at minimum in Manual mode): forward – 1 second, reverse – 0.5 seconds; In reverse mode, the repeat is first recorded into the pedal’s memory and then played back. This way, the time between the initial attack and the first reversed repeat is doubled. Account for that when keeping in time with the music; The delay is designed to easily reach self-oscillation, particularly with the resonant filter engaged; Scratches and crackles when turning the WARP knob are normal and may be sought after by lo-fi enthusiasts. Those sounds are produced when the DSP chip is overwhelmed and can’t synchronize instantly, particularly with the MODE switch in the middle position. If you want to hear a lot of noise or replicate a dusty vinyl, keep twisting the WARP knob; To turn the Paradox into a flanger, set the MODE switch in the middle position, set the minimum delay time you can find, then set the WARP knob to 7 o’clock; The Paradox delay uses active bypass to eliminate multiple reflections of the bypass footswitch click; The pedal utilizes an all-analog dry path, which means your dry signal is unaffected; The MIX knob controls the volume of the wet signal. The dry signal’s volume is unaffected; To switch tails on or off, cycle the power and press the footswitch 10 times within the first 10 seconds. Fast-blinking LED indicates that the tails are now off. If the LED blinks slowly, the tails have just been switched on; The pedal’s current draw may reach 70mA, so battery life is unlikely to exceed 1 or 2 hours. For regular use, it is strongly recommended to use a matching PSU. Specs
